The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) together with the Magbassa Kita Foundation, Inc. (MKFI) and the Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy (PCID) are working together on a productivity enhancement program titled, “The Sarimanok Project” to create livelihood and employment opportunities for Maranao IDPs via traditional Maranao craft.

DTI has brought in clothing company, Folded and Hung who will showcase the sequined designs into their limited edition products.

This collaboration was unveiled during the special ribbon cutting ceremony of the Artisan Village Marawi booth at the Manila Fame 2018.

Parallel to this effort, MKFI and PCID has partnered with Filip Inna, headed by fashion designer Len Cabili to develop designs based on the traditional Maranao mamandiang (decorative sequined wall hangings) to be beaded by IDPs affected by the Marawi siege. All of the materials will be supplied by Ms. Cabili and compensation will be on piecework basis. The project will provide continuous employment for the IDPs as the rehabilitation of Marawi is ongoing. The designs will be a component part of the Filip Inna collection.

The Mamandiang Project is part of the third phase of MKFI’s adult literacy project which aims to increase income and employment through livelihood training, apprenticeship and entrepreneurship and capacitate human resources for the future of Maranao IDPs. It will be set in two sites adjacent to Marawi (Bito).
