The Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy (PCID) met with the Embassy of Japan’s First Secretary (Political), Mr. Hiromichi Matsuo, last Wednesday, April 19, to discuss plans regarding future joint projects.

PCID, with a track record of preventing radicalization from taking root or spreading across the country and the ASEAN region, would organize a follow-up conference on Peace and the Prevention of Violent Extremism (PVE), in line with the ASEAN’s 50th commemorative.

Japan has long been committed to the development of ASEAN nations, and according to Mr. Matsuo, the Peace Process in Mindanao, making it necessary for PCID to invite the Japanese Embassy to join the PCID’s growing list of partners (Southeast Asian Regional Network of CSOs, Women’s Alliance for Security Leadership, Friends of Peace, etc.).

As a way to engage the youth, Mr. Matsuo discussed a plan for a round of school and university visits, and mentioned that PCID might be involved with this project, as PCID was already invited by the Japan Embassy to send a delegation to Tokyo for a speaking engagement (headed by Ms. Amina Rasul, PCID President).

Atty. Salma Rasul, PCID Executive Director, then reported a plan for a project aimed towards young talented Muslims, which would teach them animation and illustration, helping them showcase their culture’s folk tales. The project could potentially foster bridges between our cultures, which share a common love for animation and adventure, and with this reason, the Japanese Embassy was deemed as an ideal partner by PCID.
